One of the challenges with travel photography is that many locations are closed during the best light. This means you have to get creative or take advantage of other weather conditions such as a cloudy sky. Fortunately, San Francisco has a lot of fog (affectionately named Karl the fog) which can make for dramatic photos.
Fort Point is located right underneath the Golden Gate Bridge on the San Francisco side and is part of the Presidio, which I highly recommend you visit. Established in 1853, it became a National Historic Site in 1970. It has 3 levels of arched casemates and a lighthouse at the top. Being located directly beneath the Golden Gate Bridge allows you to get some unique shots.
Thank You Karl
It was a foggy morning, which adds a darker mood to photos and softens the light. The surrounding grounds are always open, but the interior of the fort opened at 10 am the day I visited. When I arrive, the fog was hanging low over the bridge diffusing the light.
There are plenty of cannons and exhibits around the fort to get some photos of, but the shots I was happiest with were the ones I got from the upper levels. The Golden Gate is such a picturesque bridge with its red color and its towers reaching into the fog.
As the fog burned off the lighting got challenging, but the views were still amazing. With a little patience for the clouds and given the right angle, I was still able some good shots.
